The Greenhouse and Hoophouse Grower's Handbook

The Greenhouse and Hoophouse Grower's Handbook

Chelsea Green Publishing. 2017

Best practices for the eight most profitable crops Today only a few dozen large-scale producers dominate the greenhouse produce market. Why? Because they know and employ best practices for the most profitable crops: tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, leafy greens, lettuce, herbs, and microgreens. The Greenhouse and Hoophouse Grower's Handbook levels the playing field by revealing these practices so that all growers--large and small--can maximize the potential of their protected growing space. Whether growing in a heated greenhouse or unheated hoophouse, this book offers a decision-making framework for how to best manage crops that goes beyond a list of simple do's and don'ts. As senior trial technician for greenhouse crops at Johnny's Selected Seeds, author Andrew Mefferd spent...

  1. I’ve had this for 1 week now and I’m very pleased with both the product and the seller. The frame is sturdy and I’ve had no problems with the grow light. The light raises and lowers nicely and I can fit many plants under the 4 foot light source and raise it as needed. I’d highly recommend this grow system from E-marketing. If I really had to nitpick I would say the only component that I wish was a little better fitting (on mine) is one of the the bracket(s) that connect to the light. I think if I tweaked it it would snap on as it should. It’s not a big deal though and doesn’t stop me from using the system so I’m not messing with it right now. E-marketing had the best price on this grow system and they shipped it out quickly. I’d definately purchase other products from them.

  2. The thermostat is supposed to turn off if the temperature reaches a certain point. I set my thermostat at 84 degrees. However, within the first two days, the temperature reached 86 degrees on the digital readout, and the unit did not turn itself off. However, the temperature has never gotten above 86 degrees, so I have kept it since the unit does read the temperature and it hasn’t gotten too hot (my snake lives at temps between 75 and 85 degrees).UPDATE: The seller sent me what appeared to be a “reconditioned unit” after I posted this review. I tested the unit and it does work as advertised: the unit turned off when it hit the designated temperature. So based on that, I have improved my review to three stars.

  3. So far, so good. The heat mat and controller appear to be working well, and I like the digital setting for the thermostat. Nice, heavy duty 3-prong power cords, too. My only complaint so far is that it took a very long time for the rolled up heat mat to flatten out sufficiently to use. But for the price, I don’t mind waiting a few days. Perhaps I was being a bit overly cautious, but didn’t want to risk breaking internal wiring by being too aggressive in unrolling it. To be clear, this is the large, 4 ft long mat.

  4. A little odd that this “item” and its reviews are exactually several very different items. My review is for the 36W 4ft light system with stand.Easy to assemble and much more durable than I expected. I hooked it up to a timer switch we had lying around and our seedlings couldn’t be happier. Pictures shown are initial setup and then 1 week later. The adjustment string is a pretty neat idea and has allowed is to adjust the light for taller and shorter plants. We’ve had it only a week and are very happy. I wish I did a control grow without the light to show the difference but I didn’t. So oh well. I will try to remember to update in a few weeks.

  5. Ive had this product for a week and i use it for my big snake. It wont heat all the way up to the desired temp and now it keeps giving the error code. This is very frustrating because my animals depend on that heat and if it cant keep it there it will kill my snakes. So very frustrating.Edit:Because of the companies amazing customer service i give this 5 stars. Within a few hours of writing my review i got an email from the company that was very respectful. They listened to my complaint and within 3 days my new product was delivered to my door. The product works amazingly and i am very happy with it. I would definetally recomment thos product to anyone. Not only because of the product but mostly because of the fantastic customer service.

  6. This controller works well, though you should calibrate the display if the actual temp is important. For example, I use this to control the temperature inside a foam ice chest in which I’ve installed an old-fashioned incandescent light bulb as a heat source. There is a relatively constant delta between the indicated temp and the actual temp inside the chest.I apply this constant delta to the setpoint, and the internal temperature is correct enough for the purpose at hand (within a degree ) over a fairly wide range of temps.I suspect most of the delta arises from how and where the temp probe is placed.
