  1. We were so excited to get this tiller. We garden a lot, but I’m a small, strong woman (5’2″ 110 lbs, 61 yo) but cannot handle our big tiller. We thought this tiller would be perfect for me. Took 1 hour to put together, not very hard at all though. After reading the instructions, the cute Honda motor was very easy for me to start. I knew I would love it. My husband started tilling the garden and was satisfied that I could handle it and passed it off to me. The tiller ran just great for 30 minutes. Then all the sudden the tines quit turning. The motor still ran just fine, but the tines would not engage anymore. Read the troubleshooting guide. No help. There are 2 switches on the right handle. One for the motor speed and one for the tines to turn. It feels like the switch for the tines isn’t connected to anything anymore. In putting the tiller together, you see there are 2 wires that go up the right handle to those switches. We actually remarked when we were putting the thing together that those wires seemed flimsy. We are sending this back – I’m actually happy this happened so quickly. Amazon makes trying a product like this practical. I really wish it was a sturdier product.Update on this tiller – when we were disassembling it so we could return it – we found a medium sized rock wedged in one of the tines. That was the problem. Got the rock out, put gas in it again, and it started right up, AND the tines would now turn. We are keeping this tiller. I wish they had “check for rocks wedged in the tines” in the troubleshooting list. I do feel a little silly I didn’t see it at first, but we just didn’t.

  2. This 4-Cycle Tiller runs great! I had the 2-cycle version and it also worked very well, but it was sometimes difficult to start. This spring the old, 2 -cycle, tiller would not start at all. I was searching for repair parts when I found the new 4-Cycle version. I was concerned that the 4-Cycle would not be as good, but finally decided to order it anyway. I’m very glad that I did. It took me about 20 minutes to put it together, add the included engine oil and put gasoline into the tank. It took 2 or 3 pulls and the small Honda engine was running. In my opinion, this 4-Cycle engine runs every bit as well as the old 2-Cycle does. It chews through almost anything you put it into. However, shallow tree roots will jam you up and you may need to shut down and unwind them from the tines. Some larger stones will sometimes get jammed in the tines, but they’re not difficult to remove.I’m very, very pleased that I purchased the Mantis 7940 Tiller and the fact that I no longer need to mix gas and oil makes my life a little bit easier.

  3. ‎Roger Marrs‎ to Mantis3 mins ·Mantis, January 2016, I ordered one of your Mantis Tillers (7225-15-02) from Amazon. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical at first. Something that small break up ground so easy? My skepticism was only proven wrong when I attempted to start our garden. It done an absolutely wonderful job. I have always been a die hard Troy Bilt fan. Actually, I have a Troy Bilt tiller in my shed, it has been there for several years. I recently retired and now have the time to put out a garden and maintain it. I remembered how the Troy Bilt did not perform very well on our hard ground the last time I attempted to use it. It has been in the shed ever since. Your Mantis Tiller has truly blown me away. I think it is time to sell the Troy Bilt. The only issue I have had with the Mantis is the Tines, I think I wore them out, the lateral portions of the tines are gone, wore off. Other than that, it performs great, dependable starting, ease of handling, I could go on and on. View my pictures for the proven results. My spring/summer crop was outstanding, disregard the scarecrow. Spring/summer crop has been harvested and the summer/fall crop is in the ground. Truly looking forward to next spring and getting started again. Thank you Mantis for your wonderful product.

  4. I’ve seen some reviews stating that you still need a larger tiller to break ground for a garden. I disagree. This animal ripped through 2,000 sq. ft. of never broken, well traveled earth with no hesitation. Yes, you have to work a little and it takes a little longer, but I managed to complete it in one afternoon. Tilled and cultivated. Easy to assemble. Stupid easy to start, and impressively quiet. Very happy with this machine!

  5. Holy 2 strokes batman! This little tiller is deceptively small and surprisingly powerful. I love being able to lift my tools with one finger and then letting a gentle breeze carry it where I need it to go. This machine is light! Just be sure you lift it with both hands or you will have a tiller tine jammed in the back of your leg (personal experience)… The mantis starts on the first pull when it’s warm and only takes a little coaxing to start cold. This little guy has power too. I turned half an acre of garden into a fine powder with this tool and barely used over a tank of fuel. I did have it clog on a rock once and a large patch of grass but that was my fault for not paying attention. One last thing, just make sure you put the handles on right or you might run yourself over. Great little tiller.

  6. This review is based on decades of experience with Mantiis tillers. These little machines are perfect for any avid home gardener. You really can convert an established lawn into a plantable bed without first scraping off the sod- something I’ve never been able to do with big heavy rear tine tillers (they just bounce along on top of the grass). If you take a little time to read, understand, and follow the well written manual, your Mantis will start and run exactly as it should every time. I first used one of these in the mid 80’s. They’ve improved the handles and the motor some, but it’s essentially the same machine. Point is, the manufacturer has had a lot of time and experience to work out the bugs. They are a good company and this is a great tool if you take the time to learn to use it!
